Policy Leadership – Governance & Organisational Strategy Skills

£650.00

Course Overview

Strong policy leadership requires more than setting a direction. Leaders must make sound decisions, establish clear responsibilities, develop their teams and show how their organisation is delivering on its commitments.

This practical one-day course develops the governance and organisational strategy skills needed to lead effectively in a public or political setting. It is designed for government and political staff in the UK and overseas, including parliamentary staff, political advisers, public administrators and people with management or leadership responsibilities.

Throughout the day, you will examine how decisions are made within your organisation, where capacity or accountability could be strengthened, and how to turn ambitious priorities into a workable plan. Exercises allow you to apply the course to your own institutional setting.

Why Attend?

  • Strengthen your leadership practice: Explore ways to manage competing priorities, support colleagues and maintain clear lines of responsibility.
  • Improve governance and accountability: Examine decision-making, oversight and reporting arrangements that help an organisation earn and retain trust.
  • Leave with a practical plan: Develop a 12-month action plan that connects strategic priorities to people, resources and measurable progress.

Course Highlights:

  1. Assess Leadership and Organisational Capacity – Identify your organisation’s strengths, skills gaps and working culture. Consider what needs to change to support effective leadership and sustained delivery.
  2. Strengthen Public Administration and Governance – Clarify who makes decisions, who provides oversight and how decisions should be recorded, communicated and reviewed.
  3. Practise Effective and Accountable Leadership – Develop approaches to setting standards, assigning responsibility, handling competing demands and reporting honestly on progress.
  4. Work Across Parliamentary and Political Roles – Explore how elected representatives, political staff, administrators, organisational leaders and communities can work constructively while respecting their different responsibilities.
  5. Turn Strategy into a 12-Month Plan – Set three clear priorities, identify who will lead each one and establish governance checks, milestones and review points. You will leave with a draft leadership and organisational action plan to refine after the course.
